Somalia Says ‘No’ To The World Food Program

In Somalia on March 2, 2010 at 8:00 am

The beginnings of a battle between Somalia militants and the World Food Program (WFP) seems to be underway. Its actually a story we’ve heard before. The WFP desperately trying to reach those in central and southern Somalia who are near starvation and militants blocking their way is a headline we’ve seen before.

Islamist militants have once again stopped convoys of food headed to some 360,000 displaced people in Afgoye, just west of the capital, Mogadishu. This particular camp houses the largest concentration of refugees in Somalia.

The Islamist group al-Shabaab says that any Somalis who cooperate with the WFP would be treated as contributing to the destruction of the Somali evonomy according to the BBC. Al-Shabaab reasons that agricultural productivity has increased in areas they control. They also state that the WFP is ruining local farming by forcing Somalis to rely on imports. There has also been accusations that the WFP is distributing expired food which is a public health hazard.

Al-Shabaab has also asked for the WFP to abide by certain conditions. They have asked the WFP to buy the food they distribute from Somali farmers rather than United States farmers. Apparently, the World Food Program buys each sack of food for $50 and according to al-Shabaab, they do not like buying food from the Somali people.

The World Food Program seems to have ignored this condition and complain they must pay large sums of money to assure security through the country.
