Freeze On HIV Spending In African Countries

United States President Barack Obama has implemented a freeze on all HIV/AIDS  funds going to African nations. Obama is calling for a stronger push by African governments to educate and push prevention rather than feeding the issue of just administering free antiretrovirals. The decision has brought concern from the African community that strides made against combating the virus since 2003 will be undone.

Uganda’s Anti-Gay Rights Bill Under Heavy Criticism

Uganda has received much international pressure over their proposed anti-homosexuality bill which calls for the death penalty for some gays. Leaders from Sweden, Canada, Britain, and the United States have all voiced their concerns over the bill, some even threatening to pull funding if the bill is not revised.

Already in Uganda, those proven to be homosexuals receive 14 years in prison. With this proposal that term would change to life in prison. In addition, those suspected of homosexuality that engage themselves with minors, disabled persons, or that are HIV positive are prone to face the death penalty.
