AIDS In Kenya

Kenya has some of the highest numbers in regard to those affected with HIV/AIDS. the numbers reflect epidemic proportions. In 2003 it was estimated that 1.2 million people were living with the disease.

The Teachers Service Commission recently found that more than 5,000 teachers infected with HIV have access to retro-viral drugs and nutritional supplements. Even though this number is on the rise, hundreds of others are still dying for many reasons.

Kenya Also Rejects Somalia’s Plea

This past weekend, Somalia’s parliament spokesperson, Sheikh Adan_42838497_debris_ap203b Madowe, called for neighboring countries to send their troops and help them fight Islamist insurgents.  Unfortunately, his plea has garnered no military support and the country’s state of emergency status has relatively been ignored by the African Union.

Compensation Claim Filed in London’s High Court

mau mauVeteran independence fighters from Kenya launched a compensation claim today against the British government for alleged human rights abuses in the 1950s and ’60s.   The claim is based off of the Mau Mau uprising against British colonists which ultimately sped the independence process for Kenya.

Facebook Now Offered in Swahili

_45925020_facebook226Social networking giant, Facebook, has given the go ahead for a group of Swahili scholars to launch a new version of Facebook using the Swahili language.  The scholars hope that this new initiative will help preserve the language with its youth.  “The youth, the future generation, if you look at the biggest percentage of users on Facebook, they are the youth,” says Symon Wanda, one of the project’s initiators.

Environment vs Money

A proposed project is being discussed in Kenya regarding the production of sugarcane to be used for biofuels. The sugarcane would be grown in the wetlands along the 440 mile long Tana River – the longest in Kenya. Initially the proposal sounds great, more jobs for the locals perhaps significant monies pouring into the country as well as the creation of hundreds, possibly thousands of jobs.
