New President For Nigeria

After months of uncertainty, protests, and cabinet splits Vice President Goodluck Jonathan was appointed the new President of Nigeria. Parliament voted to recognize Mr. Jonathan as acting president in place of President Umaru Yar’Adua. Since November, Yar’Adua has been receiving treatment for an inflammation of the lining around the heart and he has long suffered from kidney problems. 

Amnesty Talks Begin in Sudan

Yesterday, top officials of the Sudan government and militant leaders met for 3 hours to talk amnesty.  The talks focused on the terms of the amnesty being offered to the militants by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and the President gave them an opportunity to make input into the amnesty deal.

Nigerian Militants Attack Once Again

Militants in Nigeria’s Niger Delta Region claim they have blown a major oil pipeline belonging to an Italy energy firm, Agip.  No one was hurt in the blast, however the action did prompt Chevron as well as other energy companies to evacuate their facilities due to the repeated attacks.
