Jonathan Making Big Changes In Nigeria

Interim president, Goodluck Jonathan, has reportedly submitted a list of cabinet nominees to his senate today. Last week, Jonathan dismissed the entire cabinet causing a stir among the already leery Nigerian people. The confirmation process could take weeks because of the numerous rival political parties and interest group clamoring for a position.

Who’s In Power in Nigeria?

A surprise return home by Nigeria‘s President Umaru Yar’Adua prompted much confusion some even fearing  a power struggle. President Yar’Adua unexpectedly returned home Wednesday from Saudi Arabia where he had been receiving medical treatment since last November.

Acting interim President Goodluck Jonathan was appointed by the country’s legislation in early February even though the president never formally relinquished power as stated by their constitution. Amid protests and fear of a coup the country’s government felt it was in their best interest to take action.

New President For Nigeria

After months of uncertainty, protests, and cabinet splits Vice President Goodluck Jonathan was appointed the new President of Nigeria. Parliament voted to recognize Mr. Jonathan as acting president in place of President Umaru Yar’Adua. Since November, Yar’Adua has been receiving treatment for an inflammation of the lining around the heart and he has long suffered from kidney problems.
